In 2023, Grafton Correctional Institution had the honor of hosting a significant visit from Susan Yu, a film producer and director, along with Gabrielle Burrage, the Education Director of the Cleveland Film Festival. They were not alone; accompanying them was Markelle, the central figure in their film “26.2 to Life” (ESPN Film) a project that casts a spotlight on the critical issues of Restorative Justice and prison reform. The film poignantly showcases the advocacy efforts of Yu and Burrage, focusing on Markelle’s journey alongside other incarcerated individuals within San Quentin State Prison, delving into their engagement with the 1000 Mile Club. This initiative brings community volunteers together to support these men through physical wellness programs, aiding them in their pursuit of redemption and freedom.
During their visit, I had the privilege of guiding Susan and Gabby through Grafton’s Restorative Citizens Normalcy Center. We discussed the Scandinavian model of corrections, how the Ohio Director of Prisons is adopting their humanistic approach that emphasizes compassion and positive interactions with incarcerated individuals. This model stands as a beacon of hope and progress, offering a new perspective on how correctional facilities, not only in Ohio, but across the United States can operate.
The time spent with Susan, Gabby, and Markelle was not only enlightening but also inspiring. It was a testament to the power of human connection and the potential for transformation within prison systems. Their dedication to advocacy and reform is commendable, and I look forward to the possibility of collaborating with them and the men at San Quentin toward our shared goal of promoting human and prison transformations.
