Paganism is a broad term encompassing various ancient and modern spiritual beliefs and religious practices that promote human harmony and environmental sustainability. In today’s world, while governments and political parties are pushing policies which violate human rights and oppose progressive causes, Paganism offers an outlook that encourages reverence for Nature, interconnectedness, and the recognition of the inherent worth and dignity of all beings.
Paganism emphasizes a deep connection with Nature and the Earth, often referenced interchangeably. Many Pagan traditions, such as my path of Wicca, celebrate and honor the natural world, seeing it as sacred and deserving of protection. This deeply rooted worldview can inspire Pagans to actively engage in environmental conservation efforts, promote sustainable practices, and advocate for the well-being of ecosystems.
Was it meant by interconnectedness? Recognizing an underlying connection of all living things, this perspective encourages empathy, compassion, and a sense of responsibility towards other humans, animals, and the environment. Pagan beliefs, such as Wicca, can foster a holistic approach to promoting harmony by valuing diversity and inclusivity.
Pagan rituals and practices, although can be in a solitary manner, involve communal gatherings, which can provide opportunities for like-minded individuals to come together, share their experiences, and collectively work towards positive change within and in the surrounding world. These gatherings may involve ceremonies for healing, love, gratitude, remembrance, or environmental stewardship, fostering a sense of community and spiritual solidarity.
The beauty of Paganism is found in its diversity, and different traditions and individuals do hold various ethical principles. However, upheld by a majority of Wiccans are values such as personal autonomy, respect for diversity, and the pursuit of personal and collective well-being. These values can align with promoting human rights, including religious freedoms, LGBTQIA+ and women’s rights, green initiatives, and may inspire Pagans to engage in advocacy efforts to support these causes.
It is important that I note, because of the significant diversity within Pagan communities like any other system of beliefs, individuals will have different perspectives on what being Pagan in today’s world looks like for them.
Being an incarcerated Wiccan with religious and physical freedom struggles of my own I must engage with activism and advocacy in various ways. Nonetheless, the core principles of interconnectedness, environmental reverence, and the pursuit of harmony can provide a foundation for promoting positive change in the face of negative government actions.
