Positive or negative influence can be harnessed as a power for change. I fell victim to the latter only to become an advocate of the former. With the help of modern technology there has risen a new breed of celebrities known as Influencers, who have made it a social occupation to accumulate large online followings to gain social status and influence. While viewing these trendsetters from a prison lens, a lot of their content often appears to revolve around superficial topics like fashion and entertainment, it is crucial to recognize the immense potential of influencers in driving positive change. I wish to explore the importance of utilizing social media platforms to advocate for healthy lifestyles and human rights, urging Influencers to redirect their influence towards promoting individual freedoms and addressing pertinent societal issues.
It is without question that Influencers hold the power to shape opinions, preferences, and behavior patterns of millions of people across every continent. With a single post or video they can spark trends, create consumerism frenzy, and amplify political messages. However, this influential role comes with a great responsibility towards society. Instead of merely focusing on materialistic aspects like clothes, hair, and entertainment venues, Influencers have a unique opportunity to address deeper issues that affect the Lives of their followers.
One such positive Influencer in my life is Queen Darella E. Motley, who recently facilitated a digital Teams meeting between myself, 3 other Liaison within our Restorative Citizens Normalcy Center, and Sienna Ray, Anne Marie, Jacob, and Steve, a diverse collegiate group. The opportunity was initiated by Queen D in her life’s mission to promote healthy lifestyles and as a light of the Word Church Prison Ministry. The college team may not describe themselves as Influencers but I followed our discussion on care, mental health, human connection, and cultural awareness as they leveraged their positive influence which made a substantial impact on me. They advocated a culture of acceptance and well-being.
Their combined focus was genuine and deeper than surface-level content. My admiration lies in that while empowering themselves with education and experience through engagement, they are and will be Influencers of positive change in whatever field of their individual callings, which they’ve started by utilizing their platform to amplify marginalized voices, promote inclusivity, and encourage conversations this lead to meaningful change. They shed light on many currently pressing issues and strategies to address them which inspired me with hope for a shining tomorrow. If only others would harness social media platforms as tools to actively engage in creating a better society. That’s an influence worth following.
Influencers can channel their reach and resources towards tangible actions that drive societal change. Collaborative efforts can involve supporting initiatives and policies for education, women’s autonomy, healthcare, LGBTQIA+ rights, restorative justice, environmental sustainability, circular economics, mental and behavioral health treatment, gun control, community safety, and poverty alleviation, among others. Such actions not only contribute to the well-being of communities but also create a positive image for Influencers as responsible and socially conscious individuals.
I challenge Influencers to shift your focus and tweets from superficial topics to matters of substance, to play a pivotal role in promoting healthy lifestyles and advocating human rights. As your followers look up to you all for inspiration, you have the unique opportunity to guide individuals and masses towards a more inclusive, compassionate, and just world.
To live for the people.
